Directions

Join Jim on a wolf monitoring trip through a section of the northern forest. Follow the directions to locate the wolf. We will not be able to actually see the wolf (get a visual), but like true biologists, we will be able to do our best to locate it.

Here is how we will locate our wolf!

A) First print out this map representing what could be part of Ottawa National Forest.

B) Use your mouse to move the pointer across the landscape. Your pointer represents the radio antenna used in radio telemetry. Listen to how loud and how soft the ticking sound becomes. This sound is the signal given off from an actual radio receiver. When the ticking is the loudest, you are pointing towards the wolf. The compass will also indicate the wolf's drection. Now draw a line on your printed map, starting from your location (brook, lake forest, wetland) towards the direction where you heard the loudest ticking. Remember, the direction can also be found on your compass. Repeat the same activity from each location. Look at the four lines you drew on your printed map. Do all the lines cross each other in a particular box on the map? They should. Locate the box where all the lines cross and this is the area where the wolf is. (example D5). Send Jim your answer to see if you are correct. Jim's e-mail is twa@northland.edu.

While you are locating the wolf, you can learn more about the creatures that live in the northern forest. Click on each creature to find out fun facts. Remember, Jim will be there to help you along the way. Have fun!
