Recreation Program Leadership Staff
Student Leaders are responsible for creating and facilitating many of the great opportunities offered to other students. Leaders mentor others in traditional, outdoor and creative skills, lead hikes and bike trips, teach paddling and climbing, and just about anything else you can think of!
The following are the primary areas that staff work within;
Description: Apprentice staff are those who are just starting out in the leadership/teaching/outdoor trip leading field. OLA's assist the head leaders to facilitate the planning and implementation of trips and outings. This is an unpaid position however OLA's usually get to attend the event for free.
Qualifications: Leader interns should be enthusiastic and have a great desire to learn the arts of leadership in an outdoor setting. Dependability a must!
Responsibilities: Assist in the planning of trips with trip leaders.

You get to go on the trip for free or at a reduced cost. This is a non-paying position.

Description: ORL Staff lead events and extended trips focused on getting people out & away from the everyday, learning new skills, and meeting new people.
Qualifications: We prefer our staff to have varied interests. This may be a love for outdoor sports such as climbing and skiing to art, photography and hunting. Specifically, staff must;
1. Have basic first aid and CPR. Wilderness first aid or first responder & healthcare provider CPR preferred.
2. Have experience either as an OLA or leadership experience from another venue.
3. At least Sophomore standing or 19 yrs or older
4. Have enough free time on weekends and some weekdays to facilitate trips. If you are taking a heavy course load you may want to consider another job.
Responsibilities:
1. attend weekly staff meetings
2. plan and lead several events throughout the semester
3. work to improve your personal skills relating to leadership, teaching, and outdoor knowledge

ORL's also act as facilitators and mentors for Northland college recreation facilities include the climbing wall, ropes course, paddling sessions in the pool, and hopefully a soon-to-come ice climbing wall. Staff facilitate regular (usually every evening) sessions to teach the skills participants need to be safe and have fun in the activity they choose.
Depending upon qualifications, staff may work any and/or all programs or facilities. Below are some details of responsibilities and expectations.
Responsibilities:

Communicate with other staff and coordinator to keep program and equipment in top quality condition.
Qualifications:

experience with experiential programming and activity facilitation

must have personal knowledge and experience in the feild

Outpost Summer Student Manager 2008
Overview: The Summer Manager is responsible for the oversight of the Outpost rental program, and to be liaison to the Recreation Program Coordinator and or Director of Student Development.
During the summer, the role of the Outpost manager differs from the normal role taken during the regular school semesters in that there are no staff management responsibilities. You are on your own. There are also more group rentals of gear. Planning for these group needs is a major aspect of the job, with Outdoor Orientation the culminating challenge of the summer.
The manager must be extremely organized and dependable. Due to solitary nature of this position this person must not only be self motivated, but be able and willing to take on ALL roles within the Outpost that are normally delegated throughout the year. As an example; the manager should not only be there if needed, but advertise Outpost services to the greater community, be able to fix equipment and feel comfortable in ordering equipment to meet needs. The summer manager should not have other commitments that would interfere with the main duties of working at the Outpost. (i.e. Other jobs, Outdoor Orientation leader position, summer classes, etc.)
Responsibilities at work:
Train yourself. You should be able to take on any of the various roles that may be needed such as ordering, repairs, public contact, construction, skills workshops (example: sea kayaking certification clinics so people can rent boats)
Meet and coordinate with summer program directors (pathfinders, Upward Bound, College for kids, etc.) to meet their needs.
Meet with Recreation Coordinator or Director of Student Development once per week for updates and assistance.
Continue to use the Outpost system for check out and return so that when fall semester starts the incoming staff are well supported and don’t have a lot of repairs or cleaning up to deal with.
Responsible for delivery of income (checks and cash) to business office.
Update all revenue and purchase data files regularly.
Coordinate repair equipment/supply needs and purchase as necessary.
To lead by example. Know and follow staff protocol/expectations, or facilitate change of those expectations.
Decide on what days and hours you will definitely be around to help people who stop in and post them. Reliability and follow-thru are THE most important qualities you can possess for this position.
Be available via cell phone or pager for off-hour calls. A home phone # is acceptable.
Qualifications:
v A 2.25 GPA must be maintained.
v Trustworthy with sensitive documents, money and passwords.
v Dependable for being on time and accessible.
v Well-versed in outdoor equipment design, care, use and repair, and actively training to become more so.
