Grant directed the Outdoor Education Program from 1982 through 1997, devoting his time to several areas but especially in the paddling disciplines in the adventure education courses, group process, natural history, block courses at the sophomore/junior level, and philosophy of experiential education at the senior level.  From 1997 until 2002 he was the Director of the Environmental Studies program.  He left the college then to start a sea kayak based adventure travel company called Living Adventure. (livingadventure.com).  He returns to Northland in the fall of 2007 to cover courses in the Environmental Studies Program while the program is restructuring.
