NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE

Summer Marine Science Education Intern

VOLUNTEER SUMMER INTERNSHIP POSITION

 

Where: The Kachemak Bay Research Reserve is Alaska’s only – and the nation’s largest – National Estuarine Research Reserve. The Reserve, headquartered in Homer, is a partnership between the Alaska Department of Fish & Game [ADF&G], the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration [NOAA], and the greater Kachemak Bay community. The Reserve’s programs represent a collaborative federal-state-local effort to promote and provide regional estuarine research and environmental education to diverse audiences. The Reserve’s education staff strive to develop a better understanding of ecological processes in the Gulf of Alaska, with emphasis on Lower Cook Inlet and Kachemak Bay, through Discovery Labs and Estuary Hikes for the public, various publications, K – 12 marine science education and special event programming.

 

When: May 21 – August 20, 2007. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

 

Job duties & workload:

Summer Marine Science Education Interns will enhance the experience of Homer visitors through personal, one-on-one assistance, hands-on demonstration, and interpretation related to a variety of marine / coastal environment themes at KBRR Discovery Labs, outdoor Estuary Hikes, and special events.

% of Time:       50%     Provide visitors with thematic information and

equipment / activity assistance during 2-hour Discovery Labs and 1-hour Estuary Hikes.

40%     Prepare for public programs scheduled throughout the

summer.

10%     Set-up and clean-up of lab classroom.

 

 

Qualifications:

            *    Must be enrolled in a university undergraduate program or be a recent

college graduate.

*    Must have a science and natural history background.

*    Must be enthusiastic, self-motivated, willing to learn, and have

great verbal communication skills.

*    Must be comfortable communicating with a diverse group of visitors

and to people of all ages.

*    Must be dependable, independent, and a team worker.

*    Must have current CPR & First Aid certification.

*    Experience working with diverse groups of visitors from around the

world in an educational capacity.

*    On-site training in marine biology, oceanography, coastal ecology,

natural history, and interpretive techniques.

*    Opportunities to assist with and learn from various KBRR research

and education projects.

*    College credit, if available through the intern’s university and if

details are arranged beforehand with university advisors.

 

Salary:

Weekly food allowance + transportation between Anchorage and Homer, Alaska.

Housing (in double-occupancy room at the KBRR bunkhouse).

 

Training:

Summer Marine Science Education Interns will be provided numerous training opportunities by KBRR staff in the lab classroom, at the AK Islands & Ocean Visitor Center, and at on-site outdoor locations so that they may understand and fulfill their responsibilities.
