Current Announcements:
Study at the Wild Rockies Field Institute
My name is
Colin Millar and I am the program manager at the Wild Rockies
Field Institute (WRFI) in Missoula, Montana. I am writing to
introduce myself, our institute, and our courses to all of you.
The Wild Rockies Field Institute is a non-profit educational
institution, accredited through the University of Montana, that
offers rigorous undergraduate academic courses in a backcountry
setting. Academics is the primary focus of WRFI courses. Our
courses seek to understand the complex relationship between
ecological processes and human behavior. To varying degrees
within each course, we study local ecology, land management
policy, and the broad spectrum of ethics and values that
determine our relationship to the land. We promote rigorous
interdisciplinary, holistic learning through a diversity of
readings, discussions and experiences. That being said
wilderness is our inspiration and where our courses take place.
All of our courses are taught while traveling under our own
power – backpacking, canoeing, kayaking – in wilderness settings
from Alaska to Mexico.
This spring one of our instructors spent some time visiting with students and faculty at Green Mountain College in Vermont and she learned of the Eco-League. After spending some time on your website it became clear to us that your students are a perfect fit for WRFI courses. I encourage you to visit our website and learn more about our courses and our culture. Below I have pasted a list of our courses. Please pass this information on to students who might find fulfillment on a course of this type. I can certainly pass on any syllabi to help you gain a deeper understanding of the course content. Give us a ring or drop us a line if you have any questions. Thanks for your time. Warm Regards
Colin Millar

Midwest Regional Collaborative for Sustainability 2009 Workshop Follow this Link to View Details
This workshop aims to create a space where people who have a shared interest in sustainability education can collaborate over an extended period to share ideas, find solutions, build innovations, and take action. The 2009 workshop is underwritten by a generous, 124K grant from the EPA Office of Environmental Education, so the cost is a mere $300 for the week (less if you don’t need lodging). You can indicate your interest in attending by joining our online community at: www.mrcse.org. Registration details will follow for those who RSVP at the website!
Northland is already a national leader in environmental sustainability-related curriculum, and I’d love to showcase what we’re doing at the workshop.

Wildlife Tracking Skills Workshop With Dr. James Halfpenny Follow this Link to View Registration Materials for the December 3-4 Session Follow this Link to View Registration Materials for the December 6-7 Session
Good Afternoon,
Every other year the Timber Wolf Alliance and the WDNR hosts a Wildlife Tracking Skills Workshop conducted by nationally renowned Dr. James Halfpenny of Gardner, Montana. This training is of importance to many of us, especially in conducting research, standard investigations, and ordered, winter track surveys. This workshop is great for wildlife professionals, students, or anyone who is interested in learning more about tracking. This year we are hosting 2 tracking workshops. There is one training on Dec 3-4 which is mainly for wildlife professionals and one on Dec 6-7 which is mainly for the general public. There is no difference in the content of the trainings on the different dates so if the 3-4 conflicts with a schedule the 6-7 will be covering the same material.
If anyone is interested in registering, you can fill out the form and mail it directly to Anna or call and register by phone. There are a limited number of spaces available and registration is a first-come first-served basis. If you would like more information or have any questions don’t hesitate to contact Anna.

Wanted: Students for a Wilderness First Responder Re-certification Class
Hi Everyone,
We’re hoping to find enough participants to offer a Wilderness First Responder Re-certification course, through Wilderness Medical Associates, this spring break. We require a minimum of ten students, and we’re leaning in the direction of a three-day “Challenge” course (One which converts a WMI, or Solo certification to WMA), because they seem to be the most marketable.
Please notify Jessica Fairbanks jfairbanks@northland.edu if you’d like to participate in such a course.
Thanks

Hi everyone! Here’s an opportunity to help the Outdoor Education Program move towards greater sustainability:
On the weekend of Nov. 1 and 2, we’ll be building 5 steam-bent ash toboggans for the Winter Expedition Skills class. In the past, we have purchased a small plastic sled for each student to use during this class. These sleds have often ended up broken, or abandoned at the end of the school year. By making these wooden freight toboggans, we will be able to eliminate the use of plastic sleds in this class. With proper care, these wooden toboggans may outlive us all!
We need 5 participants who can commit to the entire weekend (or a team of two, one taking each day). The workshop will take place at the College’s Maxwell Property. Local craftsman Jerrod Stone-Dahl will be facilitating the workshop using locally-harvested and milled ash.
Although you won’t walk away with your own sled, you’ll gain the knowledge of how to build one as well as that warm, fuzzy “glow of sustainability” in your heart!
If you’re interested, please contact me soon so I can put you on the list!
Cheers,
Paul Van Horn x1324

Track Training with Dr. James Halfpenny!
Every other year the WDNR and the Timber Wolf Alliance hosts a winter track training course conducted by nationally renown Dr. James Halfpenny of Gardner, Montana. This training is of importance to many of us, especially in conducting research, standard investigations, and ordered, winter track surveys. Two workshops are being planned, one primarily for government agency personnel, December 3 - 4, and another primarily for the public, December 6 - 7, 2008. Both workshops will occur at the University of Wisconsin - Treehaven facility near Tomahawk, Wisconsin. Total cost of the training, including room, board, and instruction should be less than $200.00/person. If you have interest, please contact Anna Cellar, who is our new Timber Wolf Alliance biologist, or myself. Think snow!

Northland Village: Winter Semester Sustainability Workshops
I encourage anyone who is involved in any activity, indoors or out, to re-examine the effects of your pursuit in regards to the environmental impact that activity has. Example, I am more into canoeing and backpacking than, say, rock climbing or bronco riding, so the workshops I am offering deal with backpacking issues. I would love to see folks who are into those things look at the sustainability of the activity and make it better. You can find the outline our class came up with here http://www.ncstaff.net/oed/AsSustainableAsPossiblePage.htm, it should give you some ideas into what I mean. If there is a workshop you want to run, lets say if you are a slack-liner and you found that you can use a springy birch sapling instead of forty yards of petroleum based nylon, then let me know and we can make it work: food for thought.
Adios, Paul
