Northland Village: Winter Semester Sustainability Workshops

I encourage anyone who is involved in any activity, indoors or out, to re-examine the effects of your pursuit in regards to the environmental impact that activity has.  Example, I am more into canoeing and backpacking than, say, rock climbing or bronco riding, so the workshops I am offering deal with backpacking issues.  I would love to see folks who are into those things look at the sustainability of the activity and make it better.  You can find the outline our class came up with here http://www.ncstaff.net/oed/AsSustainableAsPossiblePage.htm, it should give you some ideas into what I mean.  If there is a workshop you want to run, lets say if you are a slack-liner and you found that you can use a springy birch sapling instead of forty yards of petroleum based nylon, then let me know and we can make it work: food for thought.

Adios, Paul

Winter Workshop at Treehaven

Follow this Link to View the Flier          Follow this Link to View the Registration Form

Wisconsin Association for Environmental Education: http://www.uwsp.edu/cnr/waee/

On behalf of WAEE, I would appreciate your assistance distributing information about the upcoming WAEE Winter Workshop being held January 25-27, 2008 at the beautiful UWSP Treehaven Field Station near Tomahawk, WI. I have attached a flyer describing this year's theme, Living with the Land, as well as a registration form.

Please forward this information to your contacts and students that might be interested in a fun-filled weekend of collaboration and camaraderie with fellow environmental educators. Because the Winter Workshop has a more interactive and skills-based atmosphere than the fall conference many participants view it as a mini-vacation that truly rejuvenates you.

Consider calling your friends and making a weekend of it. Encourage your students to take advantage of a great opportunity to meet their cohorts and make some valuable connections. Any assistance you can offer is appreciated!

Thanks, and hope to see you at Winter Workshop,

Jeremy

Black & Brown Faces in America’s Wild Places

Presentation Description:

Dudley Edmondson author of “Black & Brown Faces in America’s Wild Places” will be presenting November 6th at 6:00 pm in the SOEI Sentry room. He will share his first experiences with nature and how his love affair with nature caused him to give up everything in his home town to pursue a career as a professional Nature photographer. Following his personal story, he will explain why he chose to write the book and what he believes to be behind the reasons African Americans rarely venture out of urban spaces into wild places. The audience will experience some of the images and sounds bites recorded of just a few of the individuals in the book with the hope that their thoughts will leave a lasting impression on audiences and may hold the seeds of change. Come experience an evening of stunning images, personal stories, music, and food for thought about the impact of culture, tradition, and history on our engagement with wild places.

Cindy Dillenschneider: In-Print

Cindy continues to ride the momentum of her recent, year-long sabbatical, during which she developed several adaptive appliances, but, most notably, a paddle designed for one-armed use: http://www.ncstaff.net/oed/CanoePaddleForOneArmUsePage.htm.

This work led to a TV news spot, several patents pending, interest among potential manufacturers of the paddle, and, most recently, the following pair of published articles.

2007 Enviropreneur Camp

The application deadline is a week away (March 26) for the 2007 Enviropreneur Camp, hosted by the Property and Environment Research Center in Bozeman, Montana.

This year’s camp will take place July 11-26 in Bozeman. We are looking for early- to mid-career environmental practitioners, with at least three years of experience, who are interested in:

•    Learning how markets work to improve the environment,

•    Discovering ways to make your environmental enemies become your environmental friends,

•    Refining your communication skills, and

•    Creating win-win situations for the environment.

Up to 17 fellows will be selected to participate and each will receive a $3,000 stipend in addition to room and board for the duration of the Camp. A uniquely tailored schedule of lectures, field trips, and networking with environmental economists, researchers, and other conservationists should provide invaluable professional and personal growth.

Barbara Seaman of Alaska's Kachemak Heritage Land Trust participated in the program last year and had this to say about it: "PERC's Enviropreneur Camp provided me a far better understanding of the economic balance of the conservation equation--in benefits, need, and process. My dreams, as well as my ability to persuade, have been significantly expanded."

More details about the Enviropreneur Camp, an on-line application, and preliminary schedule are on our Web site at www.enviropreneurs.com. If you know of someone who would be a good fit for the program, please pass on the link to them or send their contact information to me at  and I will follow up. Please email me with any questions  you may have at carol@perc.org or call me at 406.587.9591.
