Lake Valley Camp Position Description: Expedition Guide

I. GENERAL 1. The Expedition Guide implements the 2-week backcountry expedition for teens in the Leadership Training Program. The Expedition Guide assists in leading all aspects of the Expedition by providing guidance and supervision of teens, assisting in the planning and coordination of logistics, and the teaching camp-craft and leadership skills. 2. The Expedition Guide is directly supervised by the Associate Director.
II. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. At least 21years of age. 2. Previous experience leading groups of adolescents in a backcountry setting. 3. Must possess knowledge of camping and group facilitation skills 4. Possesses an understanding of child development and behavior management. 5. Possesses valid First Aid and CPR certifications. 6. Valid drivers license
III. PREFERRED
1. Possesses Wilderness First Responder 2. Possesses Basic Lifesaving certification (lifeguard)
IV. RESPOPNSIBILTIES
The Expedition Guide will be responsible for the following:
· The Expedition Guide’s primary role is to ensure the safety and well-being of the participants on the expedition. This includes (but is not limited to) ensuring that the special needs of campers are met (dietary restriction, allergies, etc) and creating a social environment where all participants feel accepted.
· The Expedition Guide teaches participants technical skills in outdoor living and canoeing which will enable participants to be successful on the Expedition.
· The Expedition Guide must be able to lead group discussions and activities as well as maintain order while supervising participants in structured and unstructured activities.
· The Expedition Guide is responsible for implementing the behavior management techniques taught in staff t raining to establish a safe group culture and resolve conflicts that arise.
· The Expedition Guide ensures that participants are eating quality and nutritious foods and are staying properly hydrated.
· The Expedition Guide is responsible for safely driving participants in a 15 passenger van.
· Any other duties assigned by the Associate Director
· SALARY AND SCHEDULE
· Salary: $300/week
· Spring Weekend Retreat for staff: May 16-May 18, 2008
· Staff Training: June 8-June 20, 2008.
· Program Dates: June 22-August 15, 2008.
