Instructor Position: Outward Bound, Denver

 

Summary

The Instructor position is an entry level instructional role, providing familiarity with OB procedures, policies, and the local course area.  The Instructor works under the direct supervision of the Lead Instructor or Course Director and is responsible for supervising, teaching and facilitating students in the field throughout the course.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

·         Fully participates in course planning, including development of educational and technical curricula, route planning, food and equipment organization/packing

·         Assists Lead instructor in the delivery of Outward Bound mission, educational framework and required components.

·         Develops teaching plans and seeks opportunities to teach when qualified.  Works on presenting information clearly and cohesively.

·         Has necessary technical skills required to supervise students in required course components.

·         Is able to locate and use communication systems in the event of an emergency.

·         Is a positive role model for students by maintaining a professional appearance, a positive attitude, and appropriate, gender inclusive language.

·         Is able to provide clear, effective and timely communication with the Lead Instructor, Course Director and other staff. 

·         Consistently strives to give and receive feedback with co-workers and supervisor.

·         Adheres to all local operating procedures, safety policies and emergency procedures outlined in the staff handbook.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities

·         May be required to manage a student group and all emergencies in a Lead Instructor’s absence.

·         Participates in required staff training.

·         Participate in maintenance of community spaces at local Center.

Knowledge and Skills

·         Knowledge of OB programs and philosophy preferred.

·         Detail oriented with good organizational skills.

·         Demonstrated successful working relationships with peers and other management staff.

·         Able to smoothly and diplomatically manage diverse staff, creatively and effectively facilitating conflict if necessary.

·         Very strong and effective communicator, both written and oral.

Education and Work Experience

 

·         High school graduate and 1 year experience in the outdoor education/experiential learning field or any similar combination of education and experience.

·         Certified in Wilderness First Aid or above, CPR and any other certifications required by the local program area.

Physical Requirements

·         Must be sufficiently fit to participate in all site and course activities and maintain ample energy, strength and focus to aid students and instructors

·         On feet most days – sometimes for up to 16+ hours a day. Could be more if an emergency.

·         Ability to carry weights up to 50-60 lbs.

Salary and Benefits

·         Paid at an exempt, per-diem rate at the Instructor level.
