Gateway Canyons Adventure Center Internship

 

Thank you for considering Gateway Canyons for your internship.  We are very excited about the possibility of working as you further your education.  Gateway Canyons offers a wide variety of opportunities for you to utilize your skills and become a guide.  We offer the following:

  • Race Coordination

  • Trail Construction and Development

  • Guided Camping

 

This internship will provide you the opportunity to become certified in some or all of these areas.  You may also have the opportunity to work/shadow a BLM or Forest Service representative.

 

Internship Description:

An Adventure Center Internship consists of the following:

 

  • Trail Building

  • Project Management (each intern will be given a project that is their own to complete by the end of the semester)

  • Vehicle and equipment upkeep and maintenance

  • Guiding – This is available once the Practical Test Standards for the specific activity have been completed

  • Various projects that could include: campsite construction, trail mapping, construction of boat launches, activity photography, interpretative sign project, and tamarisk removal

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of Adventure Center

  • Bicycle maintenance

  • Staffing of Adventure Center – booking activities, talking to guests, and answering phones

  • Equipment inventory

  • Research – area geology, history, etc.

 

Explanation of Internship:

The internship is full time with a weekly stipend of $175.  It also includes housing in our employee apartments and the intern will share an apartment with other Adventure Center Interns.  Apartments will be checked periodically for cleanliness by the Adventure Center Manager. Be prepared to work 40-50 hours per week.  Upon completion of internship a bonus is possible of up to $1000 to be determined by Adventure Center Manager.  The bonus is not guaranteed, it is earned based on performance, attitude, and initiative.  Continued employment will be based upon performance and the needs of Gateway Canyons Resort.   This will be determined 2-4 weeks before the completion of your internship You will also receive a letter of recommendation from the General Manager, Lee Bowden after a successful internship..

Fall/Winter/Spring/Summer Internships

Application Deadlines:

·         Fall - June 15th:   Internship duration Mid Aug - Mid Nov

·         Winter - Sept 15th:   Internship duration Mid Nov – Mid Feb

·         Spring – Dec 15th:   Internship duration Mid Feb – Mid May

·         Summer – Feb 15th (March 15, for 2008):   Internship duration Mid May – Mid Aug

 

Requirements:

All interns will be required to workout 1 hour per day as physical fitness and appearance are important in life and for guests’ confidence in their guides.  This will be waived if the person had guided a mt. bike trip, lead a kayak trip or a hike etc that day.  All applicants must also be willing and able to work in all types of conditions (rain, heat, cold etc).  All applicants must also be able to swim, ride a bicycle, and have a satisfactory driving record.  Driving records and background checks will be checked prior to arrival (following all applicable local, state, and federal regulations).  Applicants must be 18 years of age.

Once your application package is received, it will be reviewed by committee and a decision made within two weeks of the deadline (above).

  • Cover Letter

  • 1 page letter or 1-2 minute DVD explaining why you should be selected and what you expect out of your internship

  • One letter of recommendation from a professor or equivalent on your school’s letterhead

  • Must be in good standing with the school

  • Include internship requirements set by your school and signed by your Department Head (or equivalent)

  • Copy of transcripts

  • Current CPR/First Aid Card:   If not current, selected interns must arrive with current CPR/First Aid Card
