SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT
HENRIK IBSEN: THE BIRTH OF ”FRILUFTSLIV”
A 150 YEAR INTERNATIONAL DIALOGUE CONFERENCE JUBILEE CELEBRATION
NORD-TRØNDELAG UNIVERSITY COLLEGE NORWAY
SEPTEMBER 14-19, 2009
Paa Viddene (On the Heights)
Well, then come! In wind and rainstorm, ‘Cross the highland’s rolling
He who wants may take the church road: I will not, for I am free! In the lonely seter-corner, My abundant catch I take There’s a hearth, and a table, And friluftsliv for my thoughts.
Henrik Ibsen, 1859
In 1859, the word ”friluftsliv” first emerged in printed form from the pen of Henrik Ibsen in his poem “På Viddene” (“On the Heights”), a word which has anchored itself deeply in the Scandinavian soul ever since.
Today, the word and its manifold interpretations in philosophy and activity have taken flight, seeking new horizons.
At Nord-Trøndelag University College in central Norway we wish to invite reflective outdoor scholars and practitioners from around the world in a celebration of this jubilee of the friluftsliv phenomenon and its perspectives ahead.
Would you like to join us for this friluftsliv feast for mind, body, and soul?
Our vision is for a creatively distinctive conference, doing honour to the spirit of Ibsen. We would like to build on the much lauded pioneering format of the 2007 Gisna Valley conference in Norway, “Being in Nature; -Experiential Learning and Teaching”, where speaking, reading, and writing about friluftsliv was woven intimately with its practice.
How do we visualize this?
The PROGRAMME will be as follows:
Day 1: Levanger campus, Nord-Trøndelag University College. Registration and plenum sessions, indoors and outdoors. Day 2: Transport to Nedalshytta mountain station (Norway). Website: (www.turistforeningen.no/english/cabin.php?ca_id=5). Plenum and group sessions, indoors and outdoors. Day 3: Group session hike to Storerikvollen mountain station (Norway). Website: (www.turistforeningen.no/english/cabin.php?ca_id=15). This 21 km route on the eastern shore of lake Nesjøen goes north along the lake, but above the treeline, with views of the rugged Sylane mountain range to the east. Approaching Storerikvollen the route approaches the vegetated shoreline of Essandsjøen, on the north shore of which lies the station. The route is relatively flat. Plenum and group sessions at station in the evening. Day 4: Group session hike to Sylarna mountain station (Sweden). This 19 km route climbs SE from the lake up into the Sylane/Sylarna massif where the Sylarna station lies in the main valley of this area. Website: (www.stfsylarna.com). This day is the most alpine of the conference. Plenum and group sessions at station in evening. Day 5: Group session hike to Storulvån mountain station (Sweden). Website: (www.storulvan.se). This 16 km route travels NE in a relatively straight line with mountain views in all directions. The terrain is generally downhill on this last day of the conference. Plenum session and Ibsen Jubilee Dinner at station in evening. Day 6: Morning transport to Enafors and Stjørdal railway stations and Trondheim/Værnes airport.
The Setting:
The Nord-Trøndelag University College campus, (www.hint.no/hint/international), on a peninsula of the Trondheim fjord, is a worthy opening site for the conference; -a setting where “near friluftsliv” takes place daily not only for those on campus, but also for the town population.
That the main setting for the jubilee celebration should then move to the mountains is in the spirit of Ibsen’s “On the Heights”. The mountain region to the south-east is legendary in Scandinavian friluftsliv, and the area will be in its full autumn colour glory in September. The peaks, mountain stations, hiking/skiing routes, and the mountain huts on both sides of the Norwegian/Swedish border have for many an iconic status. Here the conference participants will live the border-transcending character of modern friluftsliv, so appropriate from the perspective of Henrik Ibsen, the internationalist. With one conference mountain station in each country reachable by road, and the other by foot; comparative reflections on high country friluftsliv in Scandinavia are enhanced.
Themes:
Presentations are invited on the broad theme of the significance and meaning of friluftsliv from Ibsen to the present, and its role in the challenging times ahead. More specific themes are as follows:
- “…And friluftsliv for my thoughts.” –Henrik Ibsen, 1859 - Friluftsliv in the era of the climate debate ; -Quo vadis? - Friluftsliv in the postmodern societal arena; -a distant cry in the wilderness? - The environmental impact of friluftsliv; -does the jury have a verdict/solution? - Friluftsliv; -its influence and prospects in the global arena. - Friluftsliv; -a way to become self-determined, not determined? - Is friluftsliv a non-material guide to life in a material world? - 1859; -the midpoint of the union period of Norway and Sweden: -a 150 year divergent friluftsliv path in the two nations?
Scholarly critiques of existing theory and research are also welcome. Presentations submitted on outdoor themes outside the above scope will be considered according to program space. Postgraduate student work, and works in progress may be submitted for review.
Abstracts:
Abstracts for presentations are invited. Submissions should be made as an e-mail attachment to aage.jensen@hint.no with subject line IBSEN2009ABSTRACT<AUTHOR’S NAME>. Abstracts should be no more than 300 words, and must include: conference theme the abstract addresses, name of author(s), organization, mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address. Abstracts must conform to APA (American Psychological Association) guidelines and be in Word format. Scientific committee will consider no more than two abstracts per registrant.
Important dates and deadlines:
- Abstract deadline is December 5, 2008. Early submission is welcomed. - Notification of acceptance, as well as instructions for full paper submission will be given by January 9, 2009. - Full paper submission deadline is March 20, 2009, Ibsen’s birthday. Early submission is welcomed. All papers will be peer reviewed for the purpose of Conference Proceedings inclusion. Final decision of the reviewers will be communicated by April 30. - Early deadline for registration is June 1, 2009. Final registration date is August 15, 2009. Participants who wish to overnight indoors in the mountain stations should meet the early deadline. - Conference Proceedings distribution in electronic format to participants will start in June 2009. Only papers of authors registered for the conference will be included in this format of the Proceedings. - Proceedings in paper format will be mailed to participants after the conference. Only papers of presenting authors will be included.
Presentations:
The success of the celebration will depend heavily on participant familiarity with the Proceedings and consequent engaged contributions to the discussions. Hiking sessions between stations will be led by authors of Proceedings papers where the presentation themes will be discussed in small groups while walking and at rest stops. A host friluftsliv student familiar with the area will be with each group for purposes of orienteering and the sharing of local knowledge. With hiking times for the first two mountain days being approximately 6 hours, these will be divided into three 2-hour sessions on different topics. The final mountain day is ca. 4 hours, so this hike will be divided into two 2-hour sessions. Change-over locations for the sessions will be pre-determined. Topics may be repeated once according to desire, but in no case would an author do more than one presentation per day. All presenters and the general participants will, in this way, have generous opportunity to interact on many conference topics. At the stations, group sessions may continue as needed. Group size and number of sessions will be flexibly organized depending on quantity of submissions and registrants. Weather may influence structure of sessions. The language of the Jubilee Conference will be English.
Conference Presenters:
Preliminary list of speakers and short biographies will be posted on the conference website in February and onwards. Final list will be available in May.
Exhibit Tables:
Conference participants are invited to exhibit books, journals, academic and professional programme information, and future conference materials, etc., at a convenient site in conjunction with the campus opening day events. Materials remaining will be delivered to owners courtesy of the bus collecting participants at Storulvån at the closing of the conference.

The mountain accommodations will be in the Norwegian stations, Nedalshytta and Storerikvollen, and the Swedish stations, Sylarna and Storulvån. Camping in personal tents by the stations is also available. There is a variety of room, bed, and meal options in the different stations. Campers pay a fee which gives access to station facilities.
For information of options please view station websites:
NORWAY: www.tt.no is the website for both stations. However, English link is not available for option details. Nevertheless, by clicking on “Priser og Åpningstider” you will find options and 2008 prices: “Fullpensjonspriser” (all inclusive), “Andre priser” (renting of sheet bag, camping), “Enkeltpriser” (overnight without meals), “Bevertning” (meals). Prices may rise slightly in 2009. The two prices for all options show member price (left) and non-member price (right). For booking, please contact Trondhjems Turistforening, Sandgt. 30, NO-7012 Trondheim, Norway. E-mail: firmapost@tt.no; Telephone: +47/ 73 92 42 00.
SWEDEN: Each station has its own website; Sylarna: www.stfsylarna.com, and Storulvån: www.storulvan.se. For option details, click English link. After scrolling down under “Accommodations, Choose here”, click on “Sylarna/Storulvån Mountain Lodge”. Next, after clicking on “Prices under winter season 2008” you will view bed/room/meal options. Other contact information differs. Sylarna: E-mail, sylarna@stfturist.se; Fax, +46/(0)647 750 12. Storulvån: E-mail, storulvan@stfturist.se; Fax, +46/(0)647 740 26.
Please note that in mountain stations in Scandinavia accommodations are by the bed. If you wish to share a room with specific others, do indicate this in your booking. In your contact with the stations, specify that you are with the Ibsen conference.
Membership Issue:
Both Norwegian and Swedish mountain stations have more favourable prices for members of DNT and STF than for non-members. DNT (Den Norske Turistforening) and STF (Svenska Turistföreningen) are the respective leading national friluftsliv organizations which own and operate the stations on the conference programme. Conference participants who plan to overnight indoors may wish to take out membership in one of these organizations (or corresponding organization in Finland or Iceland). These Nordic countries recognize each others’ memberships. Savings incurred on the overnight costs for the 4 nights will more than offset membership fee.
Another approach to qualify for member prices in Sweden, but not in Norway, is for conference delegates to take out membership in a national organization affiliated with the International Youth Hostel Federation, Hostelling International (HI). In this way they receive member prices. Alternatively, conference participants may receive the same benefit by arranging purchase of a Hostelling International Card through one of the Swedish stations for the price of SEK 175 (2008).
N.B.!
Conference delegates must make their own accommodation and meal bookings. Campers have access to self service kitchens and food stores in the Swedish stations. View our coming website for information about the special Swedish station dinners: Sylarna (minimum 10 persons), and the Ibsen Jubilee Dinner at Storulvån. View our coming website for possible conference discount at the Norwegian stations.
