Community Program Director: Outward Bound, Denver

 

Summary

The Community Programs Director (CPD) is the primary contact between community partners and the Outward Bound Denver (OBD) Center. This position is responsible for partner relations, leadership, program quality, safety, course design and customer satisfaction for all courses and for coordination of national safety policies and communications.  On courses not being run by OB Denver, the Person will engage and hand-off to the appropriate internal resource.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Process Development:

·         As a new Center the CPD will need to set up internal systems and processes in collaboration with other Outward Bound programs.  This includes, but is not limited to:

o        Develop program plans to offer 1-2 day Insight and 5 day Peer Leadership courses in Denver.  Documentation of all program plans for replication.

o        Develop supporting plans to run these courses with excellent trained staff (i.e. Contracts, Medical Screening, New Program Plans (NPPs), gear, food, etc.).

o        Develop community service day offerings, in conjunction with OB Alumni.

Community Liaison

·         Recruit students and teachers for Outward Bound Denver program offerings.

·         Develop a target list of schools, agencies and other partners with the intent to create new relationships and opportunities for program delivery and student recruitment.  Coordinate visits to all partner schools and agencies.

·         Develop appropriate materials, communication strategies and follow up activities for student and teacher recruitment.  These activities include, but are not limited to, informational brochures, application and selection criteria, parent information packets, alumni events and packets, internet communication including email and website materials and updates, flyers, videos and advertisements for newspaper, TV and radio.

·         Create and follow a time line of when marketing and recruitment information is forwarded to schools and other customers, in coordination with the Executive Director.

·         Ensure that up to date and accurate course details and information is sent to schools and community groups in a timely and accurate manner including enrollment materials, contracts, medicals forms, etc.

·         Establish and commit to early enrollment for all scheduled dates and program bookings. This will be done in agreement with the Executive Director and will strive for the goal of a significant waiting list.

·         Plan and execute post program components to include, but not limited to, pre and post course evaluations, required reports to school and community partners, alumni events, service days graduation events, and other opportunities as they occur.

·         Develop and coordinate field instructor recruitment, training and retention.

·         Responsible for preparation of contracts for community partners, coordinating any specific course design/curriculum link.

·         Ensure overall customer satisfaction with Center program quality and implementation through regular feedback vehicles including semi-annual customer feedback forums and ongoing engagement with schools, parents and alumni.

·         Act as a positive liaison for parents and students family members.

Safety Officer

·         Oversee systems and incident reporting for courses running through OBD.  Coordinate as needed with other divisions of OB running parts of courses.

·         Oversee the content and delivery of course safety briefings and the field use of quarterly safety reports into all courses running out of OBD.

·         Respond to field emergencies.

Program Leadership

·         Collaborate as a member of the Outward Bound Denver Leadership Team.

·         Oversee administration, delivery and course quality of all programs run by OBD regardless of course length or composition.

·         Oversee scheduling for courses and logistics including buildings, meeting rooms, campsites, gear, housing assignments, ropes course, etc.

·         Collaborate with other programs and department on staffing, human resources, enrollment and capacity management, training, staff development, staff resources, catalog / web / course descriptions, and feedback and response systems.

·         Assure all details are handled for programs including course paperwork, land use, food ordering, equipment ordering, gear provisions, and driving, chaperoning, fleet management and outside contracts.

·         Supervisory visits to field operation sites.

·         Coordinate service offerings from Outward Bound Denver.

·         Supervise and develop direct reports which could include Course Directors, Field Staff, etc.

Business Management

·         Assist the Executive Director with budgeting, tracking, and controlling expenses for all programs run by OBD.

·         Develop tracking systems for partners, students, and course offerings. 

·         Review and respond to course paperwork.

·         Responsible for all program data entry for both scholarship funded and “fee-for-service” clients.

·         Manage final enrollment and revenue statistics in a timely manner including confirmation of month end enrollment so as to properly invoice all clients and customers.

·         Assure all alumni of OBD are entered into the alumni database.

·         Uphold and follow all policies.

Knowledge and Skills

·         Knowledge of OB programs and philosophy.

·         Detail oriented with good organizational skills.

·         Flexible, self-starting, service oriented individual.

·         Ability to problem solve, prioritize and manage multiple tasks successfully within tight timelines and high stress.

·         Very strong and effective communicator, both written and oral.

·         Experienced in, and committed to, the delivery of exceptional customer service.

·         Ability to develop positive, productive relationships with students and their families, Outward Bound staff and regional teams.

·         Telephone skills, Computer skills: MS Word, Excel and email experience.

·         Current certification in all areas required for Course Director.

·         Solid understanding of staff performance evaluation and staff development tools.

·         Working knowledge of Denver/front range urban areas.

·         Basic knowledge of budgets and Excel.

·         Ability to relate to diverse communities, staff and clients.

·         Flexibility to work required hours and odd schedules.

·         Solid interpersonal skills.

Education and Work Experience

·         Bachelor degree and 1-3 years experience in the outdoor education/experiential learning field or any similar combination of education and experience.

·         Outward Bound or similar expeditionary/experiential learning experience and/or inner-city experience required. 

·         Management experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

·         Ability to participate in vigorous to moderate physical activity including but not limited to running, swimming, backpacking and biking.

·         Ability to lift and move a minimum of 40 pounds.

·         Frequent local travel and irregular hours are expected and may be required to support students in the field.
