Description:

The Adaptive Sports Center's mission is to enhance the lives of people with disabilities by promoting & providing successful outdoor adventure activities and experiential education with the highest quality instruction and equipment available. The activities that the Adaptive Sports Center (ASC) offers teach new life skills, build self-confidence, and empower people with disabilities to challenge themselves both mentally and physically and to experience success. The skills learned while engaging in outdoor recreation carry over into our clients' daily lives by offering them a higher level of comfort with their abilities, increased body awareness and more options for physical activity. With the support of volunteers, dedicated instructors, and the local community, The ASC has thrived and grown to become one of the premiere programs for outdoor adaptive recreation. Our summer programs focuses on the theme of helping participants to enjoy outdoor and adventure-related activities in Crested Butte's mountain environment. The ASC makes a concerted effort to share with other communities and organizations our extensive experience in administrating adaptive sports programs. The ASC is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization and is a chapter of Disabled Sports USA and a member school of the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) and the American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI). PROGRAM HISTORY The ASC was founded in 1987 when President and Mrs. Carter joined a group of local residents to form the Physically Challenged Ski Program of Crested Butte, which has evolved into the year-round, nationally recognized ASC. The ASC accomplishes its mission by providing adaptive equipment and instruction in bicycling, ropes course, rafting, rock climbing, sea kayaking, camping and canoeing activities in a daily or multi-day format.

Qualifications:

The Adaptive Sports Center offers internships to students studying: ¨ Outdoor Recreation & Education ¨ Recreation for Special Populations ¨ Program Administration & Management ¨ Community Based Therapeutic Recreation ¨ Psychology, Sociology and Physical Education, students completing 4-year degrees or higher education requirements preferred.  Current CPR, wilderness first aid and a clean driving record required.
